The metro is cheap, fast and convenient for travelling around big cities in China. All station signs have both Chinese and English. Follow these simple steps for a smooth trip.
Step 1: Find the metro station. Look for the metro logo on the street.
Step 2: Go through security check. Put your bags on the belt. Security check is required for everyone.
Step 3: Get your way to pay. You have three choices.
- QR code (most easy): Open Alipay or WeChat, find the transit QR code, choose your city. Scan the code at the gate when you enter and exit.
- Single-journey ticket: Buy it from the ticket machine. You can change the machine language to English. Select your destination and pay by cash or card.
- Bank card: Some gates support foreign contactless credit cards.
Step 4: Find your line and direction. Each metro line has a different colour. Check the sign to make sure you go the right way. Do not take the opposite direction.
Step 5: Wait on the platform. Stand behind the yellow line. Let people get off first before you get on the train.
Step 6: Transfer if you need. Follow the “Transfer” signs. Some transfers need a short walk.
Step 7: Get out. When you arrive at your stop, leave the train. Scan your QR code or swipe your ticket/card at the exit gate.
Useful tips
- Rush hour is 7:00–9:00 and 17:00–19:00. Trains are very crowded at this time.
- Do not eat, drink or make loud noise inside the train.
- Give your seat to the elderly, pregnant women and people with babies.
- If you have questions, ask the station staff for help.
Enjoy your ride on China’s metro!
