West Lake, Hangzhou: Poetic Paradise of Jiangnan

west lake, hangzhou

West Lake lies in the heart of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, and is a celebrated UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. An old Chinese saying goes: “Above there is heaven; below are Suzhou and Hangzhou.” Surrounded by green hills on three sides and opening to the city on the fourth, West Lake is not defined by dramatic, towering scenery. Its charm is soft, subtle and deeply poetic, inspiring poets, artists and legends for more than a thousand years.

Its most famous highlights are the Ten Scenes of West Lake. Spring Dawn at Su Causeway was built under the direction of the great Northern Song poet Su Dongpo. This long lakeside embankment is lined with peach blossoms and weeping willows, dotted with six stone arch bridges, and looks most magical wrapped in light spring mist. Lingering Snow on Broken Bridge is the lake’s most iconic landmark, closely tied to the beloved folk tale Legend of the White Snake. After snowfall, sunlight melts snow on one side of the bridge while the shaded side stays white, creating the illusion of a broken span. Three Pools Mirroring the Moon sits on the largest lake island. Three stone pagodas rise quietly from the water. On calm moonlit nights, lanterns lit inside the pagodas blend moonlight, lamplight and lake reflections — this view is featured on the back of China’s one-yuan banknote.

The remaining seven classic views are Leifeng Pagoda in Evening Glow, Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake, Lotus in the Breeze at Crooked Courtyard, Viewing Fish at Flower Harbor, Orioles Singing in the Willows, Twin Peaks Piercing the Clouds and Evening Bell Ringing at Nanping Hill. These scenes capture different hours, seasons and weather, each with its own quiet magic.

There is no need to rush your visit to West Lake; slow exploration is the best way to enjoy it. You can rent a bicycle and cycle along the shore, wander tree-shaded lakeside paths, or board a traditional wooden rowboat to drift across the water, watching pagodas, pavilions and distant hills mirror on gentle waves. At sunset, golden light wraps around Leifeng Pagoda, creating a serene, unforgettable sight. At Viewing Fish at Flower Harbor, colourful koi swim freely among lush gardens.

West Lake reinvents itself through every season. Spring brings peach blossoms and misty rain. Summer fills the lake with blooming lotus flowers. Clear autumn skies carry sweet osmanthus fragrance and perfect moon-gazing evenings. Winter snow blankets hills and water, wrapping the whole landscape in quiet stillness.

Beyond scenery, West Lake carries rich folklore, ancient poetry, delicious Hangzhou cuisine and the famous Longjing tea culture. The lakeside area is free to enter, with connected trails, boat services, teahouses and classical gardens. It invites travellers of all ages to unwind and experience the timeless romance of Jiangnan.
